Billions of Voices

“This is about hearing a call, about raising an alarm. Connect, engage and share with others who want to see change” so say the founder’s of Chime for Change, a new platform and initiative created to help raise funding to promote the empowerment of women.

Gender equality has progressed greatly since the early days of the radical feminist movements that have over the last century helped to achieve women’s voting rights, pay equality, the right to buy property and enter into contracts, have abortions and to be able to climb the corporate ladder. Yet on the world stage, despite international regulation and agreements women are still facing human rights abuses, cultural gender limitations and equality that bring access to education, legal empowerment and medical care.

Chime for Change has been created with the intention of supporting and funding projects for girls and women around the world, to give a voice, to help women to become more politically active, more in control of their futures and to be more safe from domestic violence. One of the main ideas is that through sharing 'powerful stories' women can be motivated and inspired to promote action and bring change. “Billions of voices calling for the empowerment of girls and women, empowerment through education, through health, through justice”.

The project is co-founded by Frida Giannini and Salma Hayek Pinault who are both members of the PPR Foundation for Women's Dignity and Rights. “We are a community of people working to promote education, health and justice for every girl, every woman, everywhere”. Due to advances in technology, women around the world can connect and share experiences that would have been impossible only a few years ago and organizations like Chime for Change can help to get the funding necessary to further the fight for global gender equality.

Projects include child brides, gender discrimination, human trafficking, labour exploitation, war and crisis and many others. Linked to the project page on the website is video footage taken by members and followers and a donation link for funding.DLD07 Beyoncé Knowles-Carter has also joined the team and believes that “Girls have to be taught from early on that they are strong and capable of being anything they want to be”. Our very own co-chairwoman Arianna Huffington is said to be working on the project too, from behind the scenes and has supported the project by writing an article for The Huffington Post.
